Sfenj (Tunisian Fried Dough)

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 tbsp powdered sugar
Instructions
- Step 1: Dissolve yeast and 1 tsp sugar in warm water in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk flour, 3 tbsp sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add yeast mixture and milk. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for 5 minutes until smooth.
- Step 3: Cover bowl with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Step 4: Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Drop spoonfuls of dough (about 1 tbsp each) into hot oil.
- Step 5: Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- Step 6: Dust warm sfenj generously with powdered sugar before serving.
