  1. Step 1: Heat 3 tbsp olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat until shimmering. Add 1 minced shallot and sauté for 2 minutes until softened.
  2. Step 2: Add 2 minced garlic cloves and 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes, stirring constantly for 30 seconds until fragrant — do not brown the garlic.
  3. Step 3: Pour in 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes, then add 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook uncovered for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Step 4: Remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld.
