Smart Grocery List with Instacart Checkout
Build a grocery list from your meal plan in seconds. AislePrompt groups items by aisle (Produce, Dairy, Meat, Pantry, Frozen), subtracts pantry staples you already own, and opens a pre-filled Instacart cart at Kroger, Costco, Target, Publix, Safeway, or your regional store in one tap. Free, no account needed.
Build a list with AI →- 1. Retailer selector — tap to switch between Kroger, Costco, Target, Publix, Safeway, and the other Instacart retailers serving your ZIP code.
- 2. Aisle grouping — items auto-sort into Produce / Dairy / Meat / Pantry / Frozen.
- 3. Dedup — an ingredient used in several recipes lands as one line (quantities aren’t summed yet, so check the amount against the recipes).
- 4. Pantry deduction — greyed line shows ingredients skipped because you already own them.
- 5. One-tap checkout — the green pill opens a pre-filled Instacart cart at the selected retailer.
New to AislePrompt? Three ways to build your first list
Option 1 — Ask the AI: Open AI chat, describe a meal ("pasta for two tonight"), and the AI fills the shopping list automatically. No account needed.
Option 2 — From a recipe: Open any recipe page and tap the "🛒 Add to Shopping List" button, and every ingredient flows straight into your list. (The Instacart cart icon is a different control: it searches Instacart for the item instead of adding it here.) Works on any of the 141,200+ recipes in the catalog.
Option 3 — Type any item: On this page, use the text input at the top and type any grocery item ("Greek yogurt", "olive oil", "cherry tomatoes"). Free-text covers tens of thousands of grocery products — no recipe needed.
All three paths land in the same shared list. Mix and match. When you're ready, tap the green "Shop on Instacart" pill at the bottom to send the cart.
Planning a full week of meals? Try the Meal Planner → — it fills a 7-day calendar and consolidates every recipe into one combined Instacart cart, so you shop once for the whole week.
Worked example: two recipes, one list
Put Thai-Inspired Grilled Chicken Stir-Fry (9 ingredients) and Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Shrimp and Bok Choy (10 ingredients) on the meal plan, tap "Shop the week on Instacart", and the cart has 15 lines, not 19. Four ingredients are in both recipes, and each goes on the list once:
In both recipes (one line each): soy sauce, ginger, garlic, vegetable oil.
Stir-fry only: chicken breast, snap peas, bell peppers, hoisin sauce, lime juice.
Noodles only: rice noodles, shrimp, bok choy, carrots, scallions, sesame seeds.
Ingredients are matched by name, so "garlic" and "minced garlic" from two different recipes stay on separate lines; delete the duplicate before you send the cart. Instacart then matches each line to a product at the store you pick, and you can change the brand or size in the Instacart cart.
Workflow tips on the list view
Checking an item moves it into the collapsible "Completed" group at the bottom, so the active list stays short and scannable — open the group to see what you already picked up. Each row has a delete button to remove that single line, and an Instacart button that searches for just that item. Signed in, you can star staples as favorites and use Aisles to sort items into your own store sections. For the underlying aisle-grouping logic, see Features → Shopping list.
Recipe + chat ingestion
Tap "🛒 Add to Shopping List" on a recipe and every ingredient flows into the list automatically. Ask the AI "make this gluten-free" and the list updates. The Instacart icon beside each ingredient searches Instacart for just that item, the same as the Instacart button on list rows; to put a single item on your list instead, type it into the box at the top of this page — handy for dinner-tonight runs without committing to a full plan.
Choosing a brand or size
The list keeps each item by name ("Greek yogurt", "16oz pasta"), not as a specific product. When you send the cart, Instacart matches each name to a product at the store you picked, and you can swap the brand, size or organic variant in the Instacart cart before you check out. Put the brand in the item name ("Barilla penne") when you want a particular one. For how items move from recipes into the list, see Features → Shopping list.
Pantry-aware deduction
If fewer items appear on your list than expected, the pantry deduction removed items you already own — open your pantry inventory to see what was subtracted. Toggle any deducted item back on with one tap if you want it shipped anyway. How items are matched (by name; quantities are not compared yet) is explained on the Pantry page.
Sending the cart to Instacart
Pick your preferred retailer in the retailer selector — Kroger, Costco, Target, Publix, Safeway, Wegmans, Aldi, and most regional US chains — then tap the green "Shop on Instacart" pill at the bottom of the list. AislePrompt opens an Instacart cart with every unchecked item; you select a delivery window and complete payment on Instacart's checkout page. An existing Instacart account is required to place the order — payment and delivery are handled entirely by Instacart. Cart didn't open? See the FAQ below.
Keyboard navigation and screen-reader support
The list is built from standard form controls, so it works without a touchscreen or mouse. Tab moves through the add-item and quantity fields, then each row's checkbox and buttons, then the cart buttons. Space on a focused checkbox marks the item done — the same as tapping it. Enter or Space on a focused button activates it, including a row's delete button and its Instacart search link. Signed in, the per-row aisle selector is a native <select> that screen readers announce with its current value. For AislePrompt's broader accessibility posture — ARIA practice, OS text-size handling, prefers-contrast support, bilingual UI — see Features → Accessibility & language support.
Kitchen gear for the list: buying guides readers buy from
The shopping list covers groceries. For the tools, each of these guides names its top pick up front and links straight to it: instant-read thermometers, bar tools, coffee makers, silicone spatula sets, air fryers, kitchen scales, or every kitchen buying guide.
Example prompts, and the page that answers each
- “High-protein meal prep for the week, 40g per meal” → A 5-day high-protein meal prep plan
- “A week of dinners on a $75 grocery budget” → Meal planning on $75 a week: a 4-week plan
- “Cheap dorm meal prep under $6 a portion” → College meal prep: 15 dorm-friendly recipes
- “Turn a Costco haul into a week of meals” → A $200 Costco haul turned into 21 meals
- “How do I know when chicken is cooked through?” → Instant-read thermometer guide
- “What do I need to start meal prepping?” → Meal prep containers guide
What AislePrompt doesn’t do
- It doesn’t sell groceries or take payment. The shopping list opens a pre-filled Instacart cart; you pick the store, see that store’s prices and check out on Instacart.
- It doesn’t add up quantities across recipes yet. An ingredient used by several recipes lands as one line, so check the amount against the recipes.
- The buying guides aren’t lab tests. Picks are compared on published manufacturer specs, owner reviews and price range.
- Recipe text is in English. The interface and the chat also work in Spanish.
- It isn’t a substitute for a doctor or dietitian. Nutrition is calculated from USDA FoodData Central.
FAQ
Do I have to sign up to build a shopping list?
No. Guest mode keeps the list in browser localStorage. Sign up only for cross-device sync or family sharing — sign up free, or log in.
Can I add items manually, without a recipe?
Yes — type any item into the input at the top and it appears in the right aisle automatically. Free-text matching covers tens of thousands of grocery products.
Does the list dedupe across multiple recipes?
Partly. When you build the list from your meal plan, an ingredient that appears in several recipes lands as one line instead of one per recipe. Quantities are not added together or converted between units yet, so check that line against the recipes: two recipes that each need 1 lemon give you one lemon line to bump to 2. Recipes added one at a time each add their own rows.
Can families share a list?
Yes. Households on a shared profile see the same list in real time across every member's device.
I tapped "Shop on Instacart" but no cart opened — what now?
Pop-up blockers are the usual cause: AislePrompt opens Instacart in a new tab and Safari/Chrome can block it on the first tap. Allow pop-ups for aisleprompt.com, then tap again. On iOS Safari, also check Settings → Safari → Block Pop-ups is off for this site. If the cart still does not open, sign in to Instacart in another tab first and retry — Instacart sometimes refuses to receive an external cart without an authenticated session.
Can I use the shopping list with a keyboard or screen reader?
Yes — the list is built from standard form controls. Tab moves through the add-item field, each row's checkbox and buttons, and the cart buttons; Space on a focused checkbox marks the item done, and Enter or Space activates a focused button such as a row's delete button. See the "Keyboard navigation and screen-reader support" section above.
How does the shopping list connect to the Meal Planner?
The AI Meal Planner fills a 7-day calendar with recipes and automatically combines their ingredients into one shopping list — so you shop once for the whole week. Items flow into the same shared list, with pantry deduction and brand memory applied across all weekly recipes. Build your week on the Meal Planner, then come back here to review before sending the cart to Instacart.
